On May 17 the Preservation Society will host an event featuring 14 Saint Charles Place. In anticipation I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to revisit this timeless MCM masterpiece

14 St. Charles Place was designed by Bertram “Bert” King for the Rocamora family in 1959. It is that rare example of a mid-century modern home that was maintained and meticulously preserved with the original features intact. The Rocamora family sold the home in 2021 and the new owners have made a few updates while honoring and preserving the original features that make this home so special:

• Custom wooden side light window panel
• Slate flooring
• Cabinetry custom-built on site during the 1958 construction
• Sunken living room
• Original recessed lighting
• Brick accent wall
• Sliding door to covered slate patio and side garden
• Retractable glass sliding doors to screened porch and patio
• Confetti mosaic tile countertops in kitchen
• Ceramic tile exhaust hood
• Original painted ceramic pendant lights in the breakfast room
• Built-in wet bar

The bathrooms and the bedrooms have been the main focus of updates, although two of the original bathrooms remain untouched. The home has been freshly painted, carpeting removed and hardwood flooring installed in the bedrooms. The primary suite bathroom has been transformed from a “his and her” double bathroom to one large sleek modern bathroom featuring a fabulous soaking tub, surround-glass shower and floating vanity with elegant ramp sink basins.
